By George W. Harris

Iīm an absolute sucker for a big band that has itīs own distinctive
sound and groove; no matter what Basie played, you knew what it was
going to feel like. Thatīs what I like about this recording by the
RGRSO; they take songs that you are quite familiar with, and put it
through their Waring Blender of high energy latin/salsa arrangements,
and deliver an exciting and extroverted big band fiesta. A song like
"Hotel California" still has that iconic closing riff, but when itīs
done with the brass section here, it just levels the Boomer version.
Likewise, the schmaltzy Presley hit "Canīt Help Falling In Love" is
given a full bel canto snap, while "Strangers In The Night" is full and
bare chested machismo. Even disco sounds good, as "Thatīs The Way (I L
Ike It)" sizzles where it used to thud. Trumpeters Adalberto Lara is
bold, brilliant and bright, while Ed Calle croons through "Yesterday"
with aplomb. A brilliant idea, executed with panache. Look for this
gem, and donīt get a speeding ticket if you play it in your car!
